Everyone has questions when they start using a new CAD tool (or even after years of using one). Some are practical: Can I try it first? Which version do I need? Can I open DWG files? Others come up once you’re further along: How does licensing work? What does BricsCAD Maintenance include? How do updates and support work?

BricsCAD FAQ Page

We noticed the same questions coming up again and again about BricsCAD across licensing, features, support and day-to-day use. So we pulled together a dozen answers to the most common ones. Here they are:

12 Top BricsCAD FAQs

1. Can I try BricsCAD before I buy it?

Yes. BricsCAD offers a free 30-day trial so you can explore the full functionality before committing. It’s the best way to see how it fits into your workflow. It also gives you a realistic sense of performance and usability with your own projects.

2. Which BricsCAD version should you choose?

BricsCAD comes in different editions (Lite, Pro, BIM, Mechanical, Ultimate), each adding capabilities depending on your use case. The differences are logical, though not always obvious at first glance. Most users start by identifying their core workflows, then matching those to the edition that covers them without overcomplicating things. ( To note: License types can be mixed or upgraded at any time.)

3. How do you transfer a BricsCAD license to another computer?

Licenses can be transferred between computers, including between Mac and PC. To do this, you first deactivate the license on your current machine, then reactivate it on the new one. You can manage all your active licenses through your account under Licenses and Support Contracts.

We outline the process in the FAQ

4. What does a perpetual BricsCAD license actually mean?

A perpetual license means you own the version you purchased indefinitely. What it doesn’t include automatically is access to future updates. That’s where maintenance comes in. That distinction is important when you're planning long-term usage and costs.

5. How often does BricsCAD get updates?

BricsCAD receives regular updates throughout the year. Minor updates are typically rolled out about once per month, while major releases are launched twice a year.

6. What support options do BricsCAD customers get?

Support depends on your licensing and Maintenance setup, but includes access to help resources, documentation, and technical assistance when needed. The level of support can vary, so it’s worth knowing what’s included in your specific setup.

7. What is BricsCAD Maintenance and what does it include?

BricsCAD Maintenance gives you access to updates, new versions, and priority support. It’s optional, but it plays a key role in keeping your setup current and supported. Working with up-to-date software keeps your data secure, as upgrades ensure that any security flaws are addressed. It’s the difference between staying up to date easily and managing upgrades manually.

8. What happens if you don’t renew BricsCAD Maintenance?

You can continue using your current version, but you won’t receive updates or certain support benefits. Over time, that can make it harder to stay compatible with newer workflows, file versions, or system environments. For most users, Maintenance is what keeps BricsCAD evolving alongside their projects.

9. Is BricsCAD compatible with DWG files?

Yes. BricsCAD works natively with DWG files, which makes it easier to collaborate and exchange files without conversions. That native compatibility is one of the reasons many teams can adopt it without changing their existing workflows.

10. What is the BricsCAD learning curve for users coming from other CAD tools?

BricsCAD is designed to feel familiar to users of other DWG-based CAD software. Most commands, shortcuts, and workflows are similar, which allows for a fast and smooth transition. That means you can get up to speed quickly without having to relearn the basics.

11. How do I install BricsCAD and get started?

BricsCAD is installed by downloading the software from the Bricsys website, selecting your platform and version, and running the installer on your machine. The setup process typically involves following the installation wizard and then activating your license or trial once installation is complete

12. What are the best BricsCAD add-ons and integrations?
